The Lady from the Sea (NO)

By Henrik Ibsen and Liv Borg Thorsen

Ibsen with slam poetry and intense blues

Experience the slam poet Evelyn Rasmussen Osazuwa and blues virtuouso Amund Maarud in Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea – a work celebrating 130 years in 2018.

Little has the human mind changed since Henrik Ibsen wrote The Lady from the Sea 130 years ago. The basic questions remain; of life, death, love – words we approach with equal parts fear and yearning.

And what is it about the sea? Why do we pine for the mystery, anxiety, calm, beauty and delusions we attach to the sea? Does freedom exist? These are some of the questions posed in this fresh and untraditional take on Ibsen’s The Lady from the Sea, directed by Liv Borg Thorsen.

On stage are two leading artists in their respective fields: The slam poet Evelyn Rasmussen Osazuwa in the role of Ellida, and musician Amund Maarud in the role of The Stranger. Rasmussen Osazuwa won the poetry slam world championships in Paris 2017, and recently performed in The Karate Kid at Det Andre Teatret in Oslo. Maarud is a renowned blues/rock musician and composer, with numerous awards, including the prestigious Spellemannsprisen. A sculpture of Henrik Ibsen also features in the performance.

In the span between the original Ibsen text, slam poetry and blues, Ellida is searching for her path to freedom. Maarud adds new and intriguing dimensions to the role of The Stranger, with powerful musical integrity and captivating song, guitar playing, and new music, he emanates a modern take on Draugen or Fossegrimen –water spirits of Norwegian folklore.

The stage is set for a seductive, fresh and musical performance, full of wonderment, mystery and humour.

14 and 15 September at Malersalen.

Duration: 75 minutes without intermission. Performed in Norwegian.

The Lady from the Sea (NO) is a part of the Ibsen festival 2018.
