Amfiscenen is more intimate and modern than Hovedscenen and is just as likely to host classics as contemporary drama.
Here, you can experience small or large ensembles, sometimes on a naked stage, other times on more elaborate stage sets.
Amfiscenen is located on the third floor of the main theatre building; it opened in 1963. This was the first time a Norwegian theatre opened a secondary stage within the theatre building itself.
The stage was first rebuilt in 1980, then again in 1999. Dependent on the stage set, Amfiscenen can seat over 200 audience members. Amfiscenen also uses a repertory system, with several alternating productions.
